Māori legends and traditions are used as a foundation of this book and we hope that this will increase the interest and engagement of both Māori and non-Māori students in learning mathematics. At the same time, students will have an opportunity to learn more about the unique legends and traditions of the first Māori settlers as well as stories related to Māori place names.

You are invited to embark on the waka called “Y9 Mathematics Puzzle Book.” Like Kupe, who gave directions to Turi to sail to Aotearoa, we are giving you directions to sail, discover and explore the beauty of mathematics and the unique and rich Māori traditions and tribal legends. If you are a Māori student, this book is your opportunity feel proud of being Māori while you are learning mathematics. If you are a non- Māori student, this is your chance to learn many fascinating facts about Māori people while you are learning mathematics.

The book is designed for NZ curriculum and contains the following chapters: 1. Whole Numbers; 2. Integers; 3. Fractions; 4. Decimals; 5. Percentages; 6. Ratios and Proportions; 7. Algebra 1 – Expressions, Simplification, Expanding and Factorisation; 8. Algebra 2 – Linear Equations and Patterns; 9. Bearings, Co-ordinates and Graphs.

This book completes the first part of a ‘Y9 Mathematics Puzzle Book 1 Based on Māori Legends and Traditions".

We had very positive feedback from many schools that this book increased interest and engagement of Māori and non-Māori students in learning mathematics.

You are invited to embark and sail the smaller waka called “Y9 Mathematic Puzzle Book 2” to complete your journey and get ready to explore the beauty of mathematics and the unique and rich Māori traditions and tribal legends. You are the captain and the navigator of the waka and mathematics is your hiwa (steering paddle). It is pungawere (the season of favourable winds) now. It is time to start your journey and trace the path of the first waka tīpuna (canoe ancestors) who followed the stars from Hawaiki to Aotearoa.

Senior Mathematics with Māori Kōrero Pūrākau
Level 2 Calculus
This is our third puzzle book with Māori Kōrero Pūrākau incorporated in high school Mathematics.

This puzzle book:
  • covers all the essential skills that students need to know for Level 2 Calculus Methods
  • covers skills required for achieved, merit and excellence type questions
  • has worked examples
  • is designed to give students lots of practice on similar questions.

This is our fourth puzzle book with Māori Kōrero Pūrākau incorporated into high school Mathematics.

  • provides enough of write on space for students and covers skills required for achievement, merit and excellence type questions

  • capital letters have been introduced into question reference numbers to indicate the level of difficulty of a problem:
A indicates that the problem is at achievement level
M indicates that the problem is at merit level
E indicates that the problem is at least at merit or excellence level
